Previous policy has been to not run any shortened OregonLive URLs in the newspaper. There are now a few circumstances where you can get a customized shortened URL for the newspaper or for general use.
ORne.ws is our new vanity URL shortener – which works like other shortening services except it is branded.
If you are putting a URL in the newspaper here are your options:
Link to a story or page on OregonLive.com
Best option: Index pages
When you can, always refer to index pages as we normally do
Example: oregonlive.com/politics
2nd Best option: Branded shortened URLs (ORne.ws links)
When you have a longer more complex URL such as…
- An older story that is no longer found on an index page
- A tag page
Example: Stories tagged with “Kyron Horman”
http://topics.oregonlive.com/tag/kyron%20horman/index.html
OregonLive sites you continually refer people to, such as a team roster.
Example: http://orne.ws/bizstaff
To get a customized ORne.ws link, email the URL to $online and someone on the Online team will create a shortened URL for you.
Link to a non-oregonian/oregonlive page
Only option: For complex URLs that are not Oregonian content use a plain bit.ly link that has been customized to all lowercase characters.
